Is Pfizer gambling too much on Alzheimer's treatments?
As TheStreet's biotech expert Adam Feuerstein points out, the bid for Wyeth
could help Pfizer dominate the Alzheimer's drug market, but doing so carries big
risks and challenges.

To be sure, a bet on the one drug seems risky, especially since others are
working on Alzheimer's treatments as well, and the Wyeth approach could get
obosoleted. I think PFE also just wnated the broader WYE line-up, because PFE is
about to lose so much to patent expirations, most notably Lipitor. The fact that
Pfizer would alter its balance sheet so much for the deal is what gets me. They
could have gone after 10 promising biotechs for the same price, and would have
had a much broader set of opportunities. Look for Merck to be the next one to
step up and make a deal.
