Open Question

Thank you everyone for the answers to my question whether I should skim off big
earnings on mutual funds. I started my investing last year buying into the idea
that passive investing in mutual funds is the way to go, and now I have changed
my mind (except for such a winner as CGMFX). I have a great deal of money in
VTTHX (Retirement 2035), and I am now convinced I am underperforming. Is or has
anyone been in the same boat and want to do something different, and what did
you do? I feel I have learned enough so far that I don't need to have all of my
money in underperforming auto-pilot. But I'd also like to have some of my money
in something steady, but not something as limp as VTTHX.

I have half my retirement in mutual funds and the other half in individual
issues. I am an investor in CGMFX also. For a steady eddy type fund I would
look at the Dodge and Cox family of funds. DODGX, DODWX, and DODBX stand out.
DODGX is probably the best value oriented fund around, dirt cheap and a steady
performer. DODBX is a balanced fund, value oriented and is a nice one if you
want some bond exposure as well. DODWX is a global fund, just opened May 1st,
would be the yang to Heebner's yin. All funds in this family are managed by
committee with almost zero turnover among the committee members. Also all the
funds in the family are rated very highly in their individual categories.

I was in your position about a year ago. I had the time it requires to invest
in individual stocks. I'm up over 15% in the last twelve months as a result. I
started by moving 25% of what I wanted to buy stocks with, got comfortable with
that, and began buying stocks with all of it. Of course, I have some in bonds
(preferred's)for the steady part. I would recommend playing the CNBC portfolio
challenge to wet your feet. Also, read Cramers books in reverse order from when
they were published. Al

yes, i have 60% of my roth ira in the VTTHX and feel the same way. I plan on
taking 1/3 out of VTTHX at an appropriate time. I am doing quite well with the
other 40%.
