WTM is very entrepreneurial. The culture encourages thinking like an owner. Their history has been to guy undervalued smaller insurance companies, in run off, and operate them to profitability. The growth strategy is based on being opportunistic. They do not seek growth for the sake of getting larger. All growth is based on making more money.The company has consistently earned returns of 15% or more and has only acted in the best interests of shareholders.

White Mountains Insurance Group (WTM) has announced that chairman Jack Byrne and CEO Steve Fass have retired; they have been replaced in both roles by Ray Barrette, who was CEO of the company until he retired in 2005. In conjunction with his return to White Mountains, Barrette will receive a sizable equity stake--potentially more than 2% of the company--that will vest over the next five years. In Morningstar analyst Justin Fuller's view, this compensation package is consistent with White Mountains' desire to align executives' incentives with those of shareholders. What's more, Fuller believes that the transition to Barrette will be smooth, and that the company will continue to prosper under his stewardship.

The chairman of White Mountains is Jack Byrne, who was instrumental in the recovery and success of Geico, now owned by BRK-A.

disappointing performance

Trades at a value higher than the industry average ??? 5 year chart shows decline of 100 points ??? Why is this stock better than State Farm or All State ??? Need more convincing.
