Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) keep compelling me, because they are the new banks. In the old days banks grew slowly but had big dividends, so they made sense to own as income vehicles

This telecom has the highest dividend yield in our bunch, 6.2%, because many investors fear it eventually won't be able to replace revenue from the industry's ongoing loss of land lines. But through its Verizon Wireless joint venture with Vodafone (VOD), Verizon is the largest U.S. wireless-service provider, notes Darren Pollock, a portfolio manager at Cheviot Value Management. "Verizon continues to add wireless subscribers at a good clip, even without the ability to offer hot products like Apple's iPhone." Its network is generally considered the most reliable in the U.S.

Stable & dividends

Tech: Google's (GOOG) getting a lot of good play on its cellphone operating system, which is about to be rolled out on Verizon (VZ), even though I am not a huge fan.

Dividend Yield

The third quarter didn't see much dividend action among the 65 Dow stocks. Happily, however, what did occur was positive. Barron's statistics director Peter Miller could find only three boosts among the 30 industrials, by Chevron (CVX), McDonald's (MCD) and Verizon (VZ), although the latter two aren't payable until this quarter. The industrials as a whole disbursed $66.90 in the September quarter, down 14.53% from $78.27 a year earlier, for a 2.95% yield.

Verizon (VZ) is dead as a doornail.

I also see that Palm (PALM) is up, and I remain convinced that Verizon (VZ) will be a key client of the Pre as a way to be able to offer a product line that can be as broad and as customer-friendly as possible given that Apple's iPhone is so powerful.
