airlines will benefit from lower gas prices

I believe airlines are in a position of gain for the new year

If you’re looking for a trade look at American Airlines [AMR] , Continental [CAL] and United Airlines [UAUA] he adds. They should be able to make money in this environment. I see opportunity to the upside.

Target: 46. Demand trends are slowing, but United Airlines' capacity cuts are industry-leading. Fuel hedges are unlikely to cause a liquidity squeeze. The ancillary revenue opportunity for '09 is large, at $1.2 billion and growing. Ticket and bag fees represent $850 million in estimated revenue in 2009. UAUA is cutting about 7% of international capacity in '09. The antitrust-immunized alliance with Continental is in the home stretch of the regulatory-approval process. We [believe] UAUA can achieve (at least) mid-cycle margins in 2009 on significant capacity cuts and a large pullback in fuel costs. The market is discounting an outlook that's far too bearish, in our view. UAUA's liquidity position is decent and improving, despite a poor credit environment. With a solid risk-reward skew and an improving free-cash-flow outlook, we believe the shares are very compelling at current levels and expect a rally by early 1Q09. Market cap: $1.6 billion.

the airlines just cant seem to turn a profit. i wouldnt pick any airline stock, i only mention united here because the airline came to my mind 1st.

Again, this sector-house is not in order...too much volatility related to oil and restructuring

Poor management, worse employee relations. Let someone buy them out.

The price of oil continues to rise and airlines have not been able to pass the costs on to the consumer in a very competetive industry.

greedy management

I dislike UAL for a number of reasons one being it's management structure and ongoing labor issues. UAL also has issues maintaing it's route's which it outsorces to smaller carriers which in turn can't live up to the United brand. Although United has the best products, the best routes and the best fleet in the business, it is too large and not pliable enough to compete in a market that is driven by low cost competition.
