Growth funds love semiconductor leadership. When they see the National Semiconductors (NSM) and the Texas Instruments (TXN) or the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Microns (MU) and Teradynes (TER), as well as the twins of semi growth, Altera (ALTR) and Xilinx (XLNX), rolling up, they get excited to take a lot of stocks that are affiliated with the group.

We initiate coverage on TXN shares with an Outperform rating and 12-month target of 29. Despite the 35% move in the last three months, we are making TXN our top large-cap idea, given our conviction about the company's strong GM [gross-margin] tailwinds, persistent analog share gains, and misplaced concerns in the baseband [a data-transmission system in which digital or analog data can be sent via a single channel]. We believe significant GM expansion remains to be unlocked by the continued ramp in factory utilization, an improving mix of analog and embedded revenues, declining depreciation expense, and permanent reductions to COGS [cost of goods sold ]. With 14% market share in analog revenues last year, Texas Instruments is the market-share leader in analog, and should continue gaining share. Shares of TXN have traded within a historical range of 12 times to 35 times over the last 5 years, with an average of 19 times. We are applying a 19 times multiple on our 2010 EPS estimates. The great Nasdaq rally will get unexpected fuel tomorrow from Texas Instruments (TXN) with a guide-up of massive proportions that will serve as one more wake-up call to the fact that wireless Internet is driving things like mad here.

As the product cycle revs up, it carries with it all the companies that make parts for the iPhone or BlackBerry or Pre, firms like Starent Networks (STAR), Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), Texas Insturments (TXN), RF Micro Devices (RFMD), Sandisk (SNDK) and the other chipmakers.

I like the company's latest report.

"Texas Instruments (TXN), also known as TI, has been a near-exclusive supplier of power management and baseband chips -- the brains for wireless handsets -- to Nokia. But it appears that the Infineon deal was only the first blow. Now there's speculation that Nokia is turning to the likes of Freescale and Broadcom to serve as alternative chip suppliers for higher-end handsets at the expense of TI. A Freescale spokesperson would not comment on Nokia. TI's Director of Investor Relations David Pahl also wouldn't comment on Nokia's decisions but said that the company is aware of handset makers opting to use multiple chip suppliers."
