So what stocks does Miller like right now? A little more than 25% of the portfolio remained in financials as of June 30, 2009. Positions included State Street (STT), NYSE Euronext (NYX) and Goldman Sachs (GS).

Other plays would include banking survivors like JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) and well-positioned asset managers such as BlackRock (BLK) and State Street (STT).

I’d only look at banks where there’s sure to be pretax earnings. To me that means wealth banks such as State Street [STT 53.18 -0.12 (-0.23%) ], Bank of New York [BK 28.83 -0.19 (-0.65%) ] and Northern Trust [NTRS 59.23 -0.08 (-0.13%) ].

Schorr also resumed coverage of Goldman Sachs (GS) with a buy rating. Read more here.
