What is striking about 2008 is that so many of the stocks that showed up in the penny-stock category were household names, or at least well-known on Wall Street. They include retailers Rite Aid (RAD), Pier 1 Imports (PIR), and Eddie Bauer (EBHI); radio broadcasters Westwood One (WON) and Sirius XM Radio (SIRI); auto-parts giants Dana Holding (DAN) and Noble International (NOBL); and financials Friedman Billings Ramsey Group (FBR) and Thornburg Mortgage (THMR). As a category, penny stocks have attracted even more attention as AIG (AIG) entered their realm and Citigroup (C) hovered near it.

The most salient issue today is the debate between Doug and Justin over CVS (CVS) and the pharmacy benefit managers, with Doug saying that CVS is losing share to MedcoHealth (MHS). I think CVS really stumbled when it bought Caremark, just when it had a chance to bury both Walgreen (WAG) and Rite Aid (RAD). I think that MedcoHealth is taking share, but I worry about major contracts coming up in several years that could wreck margins for all players.

Large acquisition is too much for management to handle. May come back though, and it is certainly at historic lows at this time.
