REITs that own medical properties are also generous yielders. That's because their properties are less desirable for redevelopment than, say, a vacant shopping plaza would be. A dozen REITs with similar names develop and own nursing homes, hospitals and doctors' offices. They've lost about 15% as a class in 2007, but that's no worse than other types of REITs.
