As for the rest of Big Pharma, Ryan sees dividends staying flat because of merger loans. "While making acquisitions, Merck [MRK], Eli Lilly [LLY] and Bristol-Myers Squibb [BMY] have not reduced dividends; however, we suspect that this means that they are unlikely to increase them much in the future."

Second is Eli Lilly (LLY), the best of the highest-yielding drug stocks and one that I find could have an acceleration in earnings. The ImClone deal looks like a good one, even as initially I thought they paid too much.

From a recent Mad Money show:"I think the government is taking aim at big pharma. So anyone like Lily is going to have prices driven down. That's a big change for me, but I can't recommend them."

The drug sector is well represented with industry leaders Merck, Bristol-Myers, Lilly and Pfizer. Dividends at all four look secure, although future payout increases could be muted by modest annual profit growth. The new Pfizer dividend of 64 cents annually, for a 4.5% yield, looks safe at just 30% of projected 2009 earnings. The negative investor reaction to the Pfizer payout cut may make other drug makers wary of reducing dividends.

How about how the market shrugs off the Lilly (LLY) approval of a Plavix killer -- bread-and-butter for Bristol (BMY) --and takes up BMY anyway!

A. any forward growth guidance you get from
a company has to be taken with a grain
of salt. dubai was not news 2 days ago,
yesterday it clipped the s n p for 20
points. these are turbulent times and
all forward statements are a guess. 5
year ones are a joke. we've had a really
nice upternd for the last 8 months, that
may be coming to and end or at the very
least its probably gonna get choppy.
you're gonna have to be the judge of the
reliability of any future estimates and
any one stock can have multiple guesses
at theirs.
