Morgan recently added Kirby (KEX), a barge operator whose stock is down 25% on recent Midwest river-flood damage. "But it's a case of the baby being thrown out with the bath water, as Kirby operates well south of the problem areas," Scheidt adds. Morgan Keegan took third place in our three-year assessment.

Kirby announced that it expects its 4Q07 EPS to exceed 62 cents per share, above the top end of its previous earnings guidance of 57 to 62 cents. We're raising our 4Q07E EPS to 63 cents, from 60 cents, and our FY07E to $2.28, from $2.26, to reflect raised guidance. [We think] the strong 4Q is a result of pricing power on limited barge supply and stronger volumes from Gulf Coast refiners...Our 55 target is based on 21 times our E'08 EPS of $2.65. Market-cap: $2.2 billion.

Raising price target to 53 from 51, based on a 21 times P/E multiple to our new 2008 EPS estimate of $2.50 (from $2.45). Kirby...now expects 3Q07 EPS to be above 60 cents per share (previous guidance was 53 to 58 cents), versus 48 cents in 3Q06....Barge rates have been higher than expected in the third quarter....Additionally, pricing leverage should remain strong....[We're] raising our...full-year 2007 and 2008 EPS estimates to $2.20 and $2.50 (from $2.15 and $2.45), respectively. Houston-based Kirby is a domestic marine transportation and diesel-engine service company.
