Tobey Sommer, an analyst at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, also sees opportunities for FTI's recently acquired real-estate practice "to assist builders in deciding whether to finish, mothball or liquefy works in progress," he notes. And credit deflation's increasingly global toll also favors FTI, which has more than 2,000 employees around the world. At about 46, shares trade at 16.5 times 2009 earnings -- not exactly cheap, and a reflection of FTI's of-the-moment appeal. But even after analysts cut forecasts, the Baltimore company is still expected to grow profits three or four times faster than the S&P 500 over the next two years. It also trades at just twice book value, compared with 8.8 times for the research-and-consulting sector. If it weren't for the inhospitable climate for new stock offerings, FTI might have spun off a technology-services unit, a fairly discrete and growing business that, among other things, handles gobs of data for corporations and law firms. Last week, the acquisitive FTI bought a privately held turnaround manager in Dallas, and an eventual technology spinoff to a more receptive market will give FTI even more capital to expand its business.

The investment in the Baltimore-based asset manager reflects a significant rebalancing out of the fund's profitable energy exposure -- which had peaked at 15% early this year, and included FMC Technologies (FTI), Noble (NE), and Smith International (SII) -- into financials. Since the spring, Sloan also has added People's United Financia l (PBCT), Moody's Investor Service (MCO) and Progressive (PGR) as part of boosting his weighting in financials from 5% to 15%.

FMC Technologies (FTI) upgraded at UBS. Rating raised to Neutral from Sell. Maintains 2008 EPS estimates of $2.80 and $60 price target.

Cramer brought up the use of so-called subsea Christmas trees in offshore drilling. He said the trees are effective in making drilling safer and cleaner because they help control the flow of oil and gas as well as other fluids used to regulate pressure to reduce the chances of an oil spillage. He said the increased use of these trees and their connection to a single manifold helps oil companies reduce the number of rigs needed at the surface. Cramer said the market leader in this technology is an old favorite of his: FMC Technologies(FTI).

Another driller Cramer likes is FMC Technology (FTI).

Approval of the legislation would benefit Cramer favorites such as Transocean (RIG), National Oilwell Varco (NOV), FMC Technologies (FTI) and Schlumberger (SLB).

At about 75, FMC's stock is discounting 20%-plus growth -- optimistic even in today's hot oil market. A more compelling entry point is 66.
