The Real Story Wrap: April 15

Sell - Price 7.70 on April 8
by Sandler O'Neill

TERI, the not-for-profit guarantor of FMD's securitization transactions, filed for bankruptcy protection...as we move through 2008, the likelihood will increase that the company may need to sell at least some portion of its residual assets at distressed prices in order to raise cash. As a result, we believe a 25% discount to book value is reasonable, given FMD's challenged liquidity situation [and are] lowering our target to 7, from 11. Market cap: $718 million.

From Barron's 4/2/07

"There's a good chance that further declines lie ahead. A close look at the loans in First Marblehead's securitizations suggests that defaults are nearing the danger level, as higher interest rates and falling home prices take a toll on families' abilities to make payments. That, in turn, could reduce investors' appetite for the securities and crimp the company's margins...The stock's recent decline comes as detractors argue, quite plausibly, that the company's results are too good to be sustained, and that its fat profit margins will inevitably invite crippling competition."
