I don’t think the rally continues at this rate. I’m not saying go out and short the market, just that the rally feels a little old. And I’m watching Fortress (FIG). Even if the market goes sideways or lower I still think Fortress can continue higher because they have the right tailwinds behind them.

FIG's hedge-fund redemptions are moderating...it reported 4Q08 pretax loss of $258 million or minus-56 cents a share. Private-equity valuations remain under pressure and portfolio-debt maturities loom...however, the added flexibility of FIG's recent debt amendments brings stability in the near-term. Our revised $2 target is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation. Risks...include further reductions in carrying values, larger-than-expected [hedge-fund] redemptions, and breach of debt covenants. Market cap: $610 million.

If you stop redemptions as a hedge fund, a la Fortress Investment Group (FIG), and you don't go down after really blowing up, a la DuPont (DD), you can craft an argument that the bad news is finally in the stocks and that the automatic selling that we have seen endlessly from the hedge funds is at last behind us.

Seymour told viewers to consider the private equity firms like Fortress(FIG) and Blackstone(BX). He believes private equity players will spend money to buy distressed assets in emerging markets.

The markets already have recognized the diminished prospects for private equity as shares of industry leader Blackstone now languish at 17, down sharply from its IPO price last June of 31. Fortress Investment Group (FIG), another private-equity specialist, has seen its stock plunge to 10 from 37 shortly after its 2007 IPO at 18.
