Why I Love This Stock

Date:01 24 09

Outperform - Price 8.82 on Jan. 20
by Fox-Pitt Kelton

FHN's aggressive actions in '08 should begin to pay dividends in '09. The company is now more comfortable with its reserve levels (3.99% of loans in 4Q08), which should allow for some reserve bleed in '09 as the construction portfolios wind down. Capital ratios should continue to improve from a smaller balance sheet and the company has a chance of recording a quarterly profit late in '09. Market cap: $1.8 billion.

Some likely takeover candidates according to Liesman are National City Corp [NCC], KeyCorp [KEY], Comerica [CMA] and First Horizon [FHN]. But this isn’t a slam dunk in my opinion, Liesman concludes.

Seems like the bank-buying spree has begun in earnest and all of the regionals could now go: Comerica (CMA), First Horizon (FHN), National City (NCC), Suntrust (STI). They can all be bought by Bank of America (BAC), U.S. Bancorp (USB) -- still not heard from -- Goldman Sachs (GS) and JPMorgan (JPM).

by Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller

[First Horizon National operates as a holding company for First Tennessee Bank, which provides various financial services]. The sale of the mortgage company is scheduled to close by the end of August. The sale will include all of the non-Tennessee origination platform and about $20 million to $30 million of servicing. While First Horizon will have some lingering costs through year's end, the majority of the $2.6 billion of loans held for sale will roll off in September/October and increase capital ratios and [net interest margin]. We're trimming our 2008E EPS to a loss of 59 cents, from 56 cents, but maintain our 2009E EPS of 65 cents. Our target [rises] to 14—1.2 times projected tangible book—from 10. Market cap: $2.2 billion.

Why I Hate This Stock

I have a mortgage with them. They just started charging $11.00 fee to pay your mortgage on-line...also the don't pay interest on impound accounts. Looks like the sub-prime is effecting the stock price...too bad. Poor customer service. Countrywide doesn't have a fee to pay on-line and they pay interest...
