Why I Love This Stock |

It's a funny thing. Most of the oil companies didn't believe in the prices that were north of $100. Companies like Devon (DVN) were vocal that the prices were wrong and they sold futures aggressively. They just dumped and dumped. Now I think they are starting to believe the prices, thinking they reflect the short-term glut but not the longer-term shortage. |

Natural gas isn't going down, just the stocks. It is amazing how out of sync the group is vs. the commodity, and yet there hasn't been an ounce of consolidation in the group. Devon (DVN) thinks its stock is cheap, and Anadarko (APC) doesn't want to use its currency. Encana (ECA) won't do its split into two companies, and other than BP (BP), nobody seems to want Chesapeake's (CHK) assets. |

They disappeared. The darned sellers disappeared. The sellers of MasterCard (MA) and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) and Potash (POT). The sellers of National Oilwell Varco (NOV) and Conoco (COP) and XTO Energy (XTO) and Ultra Petroleum (UPL). The sellers of Occidental (OXY) and Devon (DVN). |

Let's take Devon Energy (DVN), which is heavily exposed to the Gulf and is one of my favorites. This is a stock that is up 20 straight points, 10 of it because natural gas didn't stay below $8 very long, and 10 of it because of hurricane season. I believe this stock could be down 12 or 13 if we don't get a smash-up. Is that a bet you want to make? |

Gottipalli holds shares in independent oil companies with U.S. reserves that use new horizontal-drilling methods to extract oil and natural gas in once-inaccessible places. That way, there's no sovereign risk. Gottipalli hedges commodity risk by using exchange-traded funds to guard against further oil-price declines. Both Chesapeake Energy (CHK) and Devon Energy (DVN) appear on Symphony's 13F filing for the second quarter. |
