Why I Love This Stock

Thacker also likes another e-commerce play, Digital River (DRIV), but this one has a twist. The suburban Minneapolis outfit runs e-commerce operations for other companies but only in the specialized niche of software sales. Digital River manages the online stores for some of the nation's largest developers of software, including Symantec (SYMC), maker of Norton Anti-virus products; Microsoft (MSFT), and Electronic Arts (ERTS). Symantec is by far the company's largest client, and some investors fear that the company is too dependent on the account, which is up for renewal in 2010, Thacker says. Digital River has managed to reduce its Symantec-related revenue to about 30% of the total from a high of 40%. Plus, the company has launched an entirely new business segment aimed at serving consumer-electronics manufacturers that are ramping up online stores to counter a consolidation in consumer-electronics retailing, such as the closure of Circuit City. Digital River shares got dinged about a buck before recovering last week, after some analysts downgraded its stock based on a weak outlook for the third quarter. Shares closed Friday at about 35. Thacker argues that the Street is obsessed with Symantec, failing to realize that Symantec and other software clients aren't the growth drivers. She is betting that the new consumer-electronics business is. Thacker's 2010 target is 50.
