Seymour was jazzed to hear that Disney (DIS) is another step closer to opening a new theme park in China. Government approval came down this week allowing Shanghai -- China's biggest city -- and Disney to work on final details for the amusement park, to be located in the city's eastern Pudong district. The initial phase of the project would include a "Magic Kingdom-style theme park with characteristics tailored to the Shanghai region." Amenities will be consistent with other Disney resorts in the world. 80 million people will live within 3 hours of Disney’s Shanghai theme park, says Joe Terranova. Long-term it’s a reason to own Disney but in the near term valuations are rich. |

Airlines and travel and-entertainment companies, such as cruise operator Carnival (CCL) or Walt Disney (DIS), already benefit from the over-50s and should gain more. Not all the travel is for the boomers themselves. Demographer Francese, author of a major study called The Grandparent Economy, says more than half the grandparent population will be baby boomers by 2010, and nearly 60% will be by 2015. These folks travel to visit their grandchildren, take them on one- and two-day trips, sometimes to theme parks, and ply them with goods and services. "The rapid increase in boomer spending on grandchildren," comments Francese, "is driven in large part by the decline over the past decade in real income among young families, at a time when household income among those over 50 has been rising." |

In the five years through 2013, Veronis Suhler projects that spending on alternative advertising will post a compounded annual growth rate of 12.3% and expand its market share of all ad spending to 32.3% from just 5.9% five years ago. Traditional advertising, on the other hand, will show a compounded annual decline of 3.3%, bringing spending levels below where they stood in 1997. In this environment, the winners are likely to be companies along the lines of Salesforce.com (CRM) with its expertise in customer-relationship management, cable outfits such as Discovery Communications (DISCA) and Cablevision (CVC), media companies such as Time Warner (TWX), Viacom (VIA.B) and Disney (DIS), and search engines such as Google (GOOG). |

Plus, as NBC Universal and Disney (DIS) found, there is a secular decline in library building that has taken everyone by surprise. |
