Another retailer with good controls on inventory is Chico's FAS. The specialty-apparel company, which targets female baby boomers, managed to reduce inventories by 9% in the period, even as sales grew 4%. Chico's is expected to earn 28 cents a share in the fiscal year ending January, and 54 cents in fiscal '11. Back out the company's $2 a share in cash, and its stock, at 13, fetches 20 times '11 estimates. Susquehanna analyst Thomas Filandro recently raised his price target to 18.

Schier's bottom-up style paid huge dividends with retailer Chico's FAS (CHS), which is up by 143% this year. Schier was drawn to the strong brand name, loyal customers and "deep" discount on the shares when he started buying them last autumn, at times for less than $2 per share. "In the downdraft, a lot of guys bailed," he says. It now trades at about 10.

Chico's FAS (CHS) was downgraded from Hold to Sell at Citi. $7.00 price target. The stock has run well above the $7.00 price target leaving it vulnerable in the absence of N-T fundamental improvement.

Chico missed earnings and dropped 11.4%. Boy are folks cruel out there. Again, just like CWTR there is a possibility that the holiday season will bring a little better sales. Of course, I don't expect sales to be as good as last year's but what the frell, it has to be better then last quarter.
