Continental reported August consolidated RASM growth of about 5% year/over/year, a slight improvement from July's 4.8%, and demonstrated good pricing discipline. CAL will update guidance next week....CAL shares will likely trade higher in the near-term, as estimates are revised upward. Airlines have cut capacity to reflect $125/barrel crude, but are now enjoying the benefits of significantly lower fuel costs. [Thus,] the industry will likely turn a profit in '09, a scenario very supportive of legacy airline shares. But we should also remember that falling oil prices introduce the risk of destructive competition....EPS in 2007, $4.03; in 2008E, -$2.72; in 2009E, $1.80. Market cap: $2 billion.

Don't Count on Airlines to Stay Aloft:

Q: What about Continental?

A: Continental Airlines is a little bit closer to the difficulty in the industry. You can tell that by the stock price, which is at 9 and change. The key for Continental is making sure that it continues to take the steps to solidify its position and its profitability, so that it can get through this downturn. But we look at them as being in much better shape than some of its other competitors. And if they get a little bit of pressure taken away from jet fuel prices, it doesn't take much profitability to give you a very good return when a company is trading at a fraction of sales, as Continental is.

Huge debt and high capital costs

should have sold it and didn't...

A stock in decline for most of the year that recently bounced about 7 points ala short covering but will likely repeat a drop a lot and bounce a little scenario. this last bounce was good but lost momentum without breaking through major resistance so I think the next leg down is a lower low in the mid to upper 20's. also a great put stock for a poor market reaction to geo political/terror/ or runaway oil prices.

We need to have at least 1 airline in BK. It's unamerican not to, right?

classic head and shoulders top. Oil going higher. Current rally in general market is suspect.
