"Syntax-Brillian sells low-priced TVs under the Olevia brand, and its prospectus shows a large profit for its last nine months. As the chart below shows (top right), however, those profits are questionable. The Tempe, Ariz.-based company has had negative cash flow from operations totaling $90 million in the past six quarters, so it desperately needed last week's cash. Investors have wondered whether the TV maker shows gross profits only because its cost of goods sold has been reduced with rebates from Taiwan Kolin, the contract manufacturer for most of the company's TVs."
