Right now, Berkshire's stock looks fairly valued, with the Class A shares (BRK.A) changing hands for $133,400 apiece. Late last year, in contrast, the shares were at a lofty $143,000, prompting Barron's to write a bearish cover story ("Sorry, Warren, Your Stock's Too Pricey," Dec. 17, 2007). Berkshire now is valued at 1.7 times its year-end 2007 book value of $78,000, and at 22 times projected 2008 operating profits of $6,000 per Class A share. Berkshire has a higher valuation than many insurers based on book value and earnings, but it deserves a premium, given its financial strength and its incomparable leadership. |
