Why I Love This Stock

Considering the consumer is facing so many headwinds Coburn told us consumer names seem particularly vulnerable to a pullback. As a result he’s bearish of Best Buy (BBY) and hhgregg (HGG). Coburn thinks Best Buy is a long-term short.

Buy - Price 35.84 on June 17
by Jefferies & Co.

First-quarter EPS came in at $0.42, well ahead of our $0.35 estimate and consensus of $0.34. On the beat, we are raising our FY10 and FY11 EPS to $2.95 and $3.28 from $2.90 and $3.10, respectively. Smaller-screen LCDs [liquid crystal displays] are growing as fast as large screens, with LED [light-emitting diode] TVs experiencing strong growth. Best Buy currently has 9 LED SKUIs, and will be expanding the assortment as the year progresses. Market share accelerated as it gained 200 basis points over the three-month period ending in April. The March share gain was 240 basis points. April came in slightly below this, and May has been consistent with these figures. Our 12-month price target of $43 is based on BBY shares selling at 14.5x our FY10 EPS estimate of $2.95. This is in line with its historical forward 3- and 5-year P/E. We would normally argue for even higher P/E during the early cycle retail trade, but we believe the market will discount potential risk from product-cycle maturation. Market cap: $14.8 billion.

It has been a long time since we have been "due" to go higher, but since there had been an extra unbelievably long time that we were "due" to go down, I don't think there's much of a reason to believe that matters. One could argue that today's discretionary call, Carnival (CC) -- Tuesday was Best Buy (BBY), yesterday we had FedEx (FDX) -- wasn't a nightmare, so we can take that off the table. Maybe even someone will interpret bookings as higher revenues and therefore positive!

Are people overestimating the discretionary income that people have after a Best Buy (BBY) disappointment? Is Best Buy's appliance figure such a bummer that everything has to come down? I don't think things are that drastic, but they aren't so hot. Best Buy looked terrible vs. last year.

He said that rather than trade individual stocks, "people want to trade ETFs." And when it comes to retail ETFs, he prefers PowerShares Dynamic Retail (PMR) to Retail HOLDRs (RTH).

There's "too much concentration in the RTH," and Best Buy (BBY) is "controlling" it, he said. The ETF is "not a good judge anymore."

"PMR is the better ETF to trade if you're negative on retail," Cramer said. "Cramer's 'Stop Trading!'" 6-16-09

The beauty of China’s stimulus is that, unlike the U.S. tax rebate of 2008, these coupons can be used only for designated appliances. So the money spent goes directly to the industries that need it most. General Electric (GE), Corning (GLW), Whirlpool (WHR) and Best Buy (BBY) are just a few of the companies that could benefit most from this spending. The inventory glut they’d suffered through will most likely give rise to empty warehouses thanks to this Chinese demand.

We've seen it going on since the market bottom, the endless driving of tech higher and higher. We get the wireless bottom, thanks Nokia (NOK); the personal computer bottom, thanks Intel (INTC); the gadget bottom, thanks Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM); the TV bottom, thanks Corning (GLW) and Best Buy (BBY); the software bottom, thanks to Oracle (ORCL) buying Sun Microsystems (JAVA) for its software and IBM (IBM) celebrating its software on its quarter; and the dot-com bottom represented by great earnings from Google (GOOG) and decent numbers from rejuvenated management teams at Yahoo! (YHOO) and eBay (EBAY).

If you can buy it easier over the internet, sell the big box stores that supply it.

retail kind of scary at this point...given that there is too much talk of stagflation and I don't think that MR Bernanke has the courage to lower rates enough to make a significant impact.
