The software sector, in particular, seems ripe for consolidation. Cowen & Co.'s Peter Goldmacher last week noted that the applications-software group is down 21% this year. His view: That's created an opportunity to buy quality names on the cheap. Goldmacher offers up four examples: Ariba (ARBA), Epicor Software (EPIC), Lawson Software (LWSN) and DealerTrak Holdings (TRAK). All, he says, offer "M&A appeal."

While we continue to like Ariba's transition to an on-demand and network-based model, software spending [may slow in 2008]...Our FY08 non-GAAP [earnings per share estimate] is 45 cents, versus consensus 44 cents; for FY09, [it's] 74 cents, versus consensus 67 cents. Our 13 target implies a calendar '08 enterprise-value/revenue multiple of 2.5 versus peer group's 4.5 times.

Ariba (ARBA) was upgraded from Underperform to Outperform, Cowen said. 2007 should prove to be the earnings trough, and the company trades at a discount to its peers.
