As the recent rally demonstrates, there will be opportunities within the stock market to play this new theme. One group that may benefit is online brokerages catering to independent advisors and individual investors. These advisors could see an inflow of cash because they offer such a wide variety of investments at low fees. Among the favored stock picks are Charles Schwab (SCHW) and TD Ameritrade Holding (AMTD).

First, the TD Ameritrade (AMTD) call showed you what I have been looking for: renewed interest in the stock market by retail people trying to make money off the wild swings and the exchange-traded funds. I am no fan of the ETFs, but I am a fan of new people in the game, and Ameritrade confirmed what I was thinking could be happening: actual interest in stocks at the new lower levels. It's a positive -- not a huge positive, but a positive nonetheless.

Buy - Price 12.65 on Jan. 20
by Sandler O'Neill

We're raising our FY10 estimates...due to (1) the recently announced expense cuts announced by the company, (2) higher asset-based revenue, and (3) improvements in commission revenue. Our new FY10 estimate assumes that net revenues will increase 10.9% to $2.42 billion, driven by 19.3% growth in asset-based revenues and 1.1% growth in transaction-based revenues. We project that expenses will decline 0.8% to $1.19 billion, consistent with the company's target of $60 million reduction in run-rate expenses. We expect pretax margins to expand to 51%. Market cap: $7.6 billion.

Q. Anyone buying CVS?
11.12.09 | 11:07 AM Asked by Skee Daddy

A. Was planning on buying it last week
after it tanked below 28.90, but decided
to hold off to see how the stock
performed for a few days after the bad
news. Should have bought; would have had
a one and a half point gain. In spite of
the bad news, financials still look
decent with a 10.7 forward PE and a 38%
earnings increase for the latest
quarter. However, they do carry a
significant amount of debt.
