Buffet buys into Rail sector

One thing I can't figure out is why Canadian National Railway (cnr-t) is down a 1.50 and
whay CP which is Canadian
Pacific Railway is up and Cp is on strike and few things have been disrupted. Wouldn't
investors be a little on
the scared side during a strike? Cp is much more expensive and Cn is cheaper and has many
more routes. Also interesting
fact is the Canadian government subsidizes many things however they don't at the present
subsidize railroads
There has been talk apparently that the goverment might. WHich would be good.

I agree with rayon that CNI is the play. I thought that was one of Buffett's two plays.
meanwhile, Gates has been loading up on it and Buffett has even attributed part of his
interest in railroads to discussions with Gates.

I think I am going to get into CN. Canadian National Railway. Rumour is he might buy into
this one aswell. Another one is Canadian Pacific Railway. However, they are on strike so
if the strike drops the price I might buy that one. These railroads ship everything not
just coal.
I don't think Buffet is buying these just for coal shipping. The trucking industry is in
deep decline for various reasons and
transportation is going back to the rails.

They all ship coal although CNI is a little light in that department. BNI and UNP ship low
sulfur coal which is important for clean air act purposes. I think it's the cash flow he
likes. I had about 1/2 the BNI I wanted before the news came out.

He's buying because of the return on capital acceleration as well...
BNI also is the only one that ships coal

GWR does look like a possibility, or RAIL, or both?

Why not just buy Berkshire Hathaway B shares? After all, we know Warren just made money on
his railroad stocks .....

check out a small, family run, quality RR that's still relatively unknown- GWR

Buffett's smart. I have been suspecting that something was up with the railroads lately.
At first I thought someone might be planning a takeover of CSX, but now we know. I would
wait for a pullback and plan on holding forever.

Looks like that stock got a nice pop today too.
