I am a short term trader - I stalk a stock until I learn its highs and lows and play both ends. If it is at an all time high I wait until a red market day and short it. After it bottoms I then buy long. My goal is to reap profits quickly. Having said that, let me say that the bulk of my investments are in mutual funds that I hold for long periods of time. Mutual funds allow me to invest in large cap stocks that I otherwise would not invest in. I also think it is important to have a variety of sector funds in a portfolio.
