Diversified. Based on many Mad Money picks from Jim Cramer. I lost money going against the grain and picking second-best stocks last year and ignored Cramer's recommendations. Now, I am concentrating on some current and past stock picks and am having a small amount of success in 2007.

2008 Update. I am changing my mind on some of these, but leaving them listed for the moment.

#1 name in bourses. World-wide growth through aquisitions and strategic alliances will provide the catalyst for increasing earnings. 2008--It's "hated", but I still own it (buying some shares lower, but my paper profit is still in the red). I see the Euronext trading numbers hitting new records, and it will propel this stock forward once the financial sector has reversed trend.

Great coal exposure as well as intermodal business. Nice coverage in my local paper. Not best of breed, but high quality. I think the winter coal business will help the 1Q earnings, but I am not optimistic about later quarters as American automobile manufactures contine to ship fewer cars--NSC is the number one shipper of autoparts and finished autos. At this time in early 2008 I am a net seller. Despite controlling costs, the number for car loads has dropped--ethanol hauls have not entirely replaced the shortfall.

Mad Money speculative beverage pick--regional to national. Its push to become national in earnest begins in 2007 as it captures "slotting" on grocer shelves. Its deal with FIZ (National Beverage) to provide greatly increased output capacity (cans vice the traditional Jones Soda bottles) should allow the company to expand rapidly. The company's intention to switch from corn-based fructose syrup as a primary ingredient to sugar cane in 2007 should provide another catalyst for growth as well as a prime discriminator when marketing itself against competitors. In 2008, this stock will pop if it can garner two consecutive quarters of strong sales growth; otherwise, I would not be a buyer. I doubled last year, and now I am "playing with the house's money" only--now my paper profit is down to 25% from 100%.

#1 Internet search engine, and ad revenue generator. Soon to be #1 entertainment content portal. I panicked out in mid-2007 before the Tech rally and regret it. Wait until Tech rallies later in the year for this one. BTW, GOOG's "Do no evil" is a lame motto from the two geniuses who started this powerful entity, and listening to their confenence calls last year did not give me confidence in their financial prowess.

Corning and Samsung Corning produces more than 50% of the world's LCD glass. For all of 2006, percent of total sales are: LCD/CRT display 40%, telecommunications (fiber optic cable manufacturing) 35%, environmental (diesel filtration business) is 12%, life sciences (I am assuming they mean mostly lab glass) 6%, and 7% in all other areas. 2008--I will keep owning this company as their core businesses are in fuego.

#1 Brazil iron ore miner. Sells to China. Also wholly owns Inco nickel mining in Canada. NOTE: RIO split in 2007, but I can't change my initial tracking price here. 2008--I think the U.S. will catch a cold and China will sneeze (or hicough around time for the Olympics). I own, but am looking for an exit point.

  • AZK
    Aurizon Mines Ltd
  • $5.00
  • -0.99%
  • $5.15

NOTE: This company has not been recommended on Mad Money as far as I recall. A Canadian gold mining company that is expanding by exploring for new reserves near its existing operations. The Aurizon company, which is a gold mining upstart (EDIT: although it has been around for a number of years, now), recently purchased a fully developed gold mining operation with the main intent of recommissioning it and expanding its gold output. The company has been proving additional gold reserves in/around its existing mine (probing favorable geologic formations) in 2005 and 2006; one thesis is that it should not significantly increase mining costs to get to these new deposits from the existing network of mines and shafts. It is, indeed, a speculative stock. Aurizon has only realized its first positive earnings quarter last year (3Q 2006) as it began to process gold ore out of the ground; the fourth quarter 2006 predicted earnings is just break-even (0.00 earnings). Northgate Minerals Corp. attempted a hostile takeover prior to Canadian regulators calling off the deal. I think the historically high share price reflects that it could still be in some other mining company's sights; also, the fact that AZK is proving new gold reserves, and actually producing, now. 2008--The Casa B. mine is now producing well and production is leveling, but it is the other prospects in Quebec that will lead to additional growth.
