Best ideas for trading and for holding medium-term (3-5 years). To hold, I look for strong long-term stair-steppy charts. To trade, I like a bit more volatility. I like paradigm-shifting stocks, but they can't be start-ups, they need to be established businesses that are either touching something in the zeitgeist or are on the verge of penetrating the zeitgeist. I only plan to post my absolute best ideas here.

CAJ
Canon Inc Adr - $38.27
- +1.19%
- $38.10
video is the revolution. the pulse of the twenty-somethings is video, and they will be mega-consumers of it for years to come. as a videographer, i believe that no one is doing it better than canon. its product mix is more focused strictly on imaging than its competitors, and that will keep the stock stronger. after a huge run-up and recent sell-off, the chart is shaping up nicely for another run.

GS
Goldman Sachs Grp - $176.57
- +2.79%
- $173.68
i started following this stock when datek mistakenly awarded me several IPO shares and then subsequently took them away, bad datek! what can i say, every single sell-off of this stock since then has been a huge buying opportunity. this is one of the few stocks in the stock universe that i can buy and then fall asleep on it without too much worry. i call these Rip van Winkle stocks, when you wake up from the purchas

BNS
Bank Of Nova Scot - $44.98
- 0.00%
- $N/A
another Rip van Winkle stock. this is a sleeper stock that continues to outperform, post double-digit returns consistently, and oh my! the five year chart is a thing of beauty. also, it's a great play on South America, which is an area where Scotiabank invests heavily. they seem to do a great job of picking the right places to be in this volatile but growing set of markets. plus, it's Canadian, so it's internationally diversified in many directions. a good proxy for Western hemisphere emerging markets, backed by a stable home government.
