Serious inclination toward value investments in good companies, but open to good growth opportunities as well. Consult Magic Formula Invest lists for ideas with some frequency, and have done well with selections from that list.

-
AFFX
Affymetrix - $7.01
- -6.53%
- $7.46
I like biotech, but worry about the high risk of betting on pipeline drugs. AFFX makes the genetic chips and equipment used by a high proportion of biotech researchers. Attractive price currently.

-
ALVR
Alvarion Ltd. - $3.79
- -1.56%
- $3.85
Small cap with solid WiMax products. May get swamped by bigger players (or bought) at some point, but seems to be growing its market in global niches.

-
ARB
Arbitron Inc. Com - $25.26
- +0.28%
- $25.33
Bought a year ago, a Magic Formula pick. Like ARB particularly because of its upside growth potential from two new developments, the People Meter system of measuring radio listeners, and the Apollo Project, a breakthrough strategy for market research. As these two new products come on line, ARB's top line should grow fast. At this point it appears that most of the resistance to People Meter (Clear Channel has been fighting it) appears to have died down, and the rollout should begin to gather steam. Know less about Apollo rollout plans.

DNB
Dun & Bradstreet - $74.25
- +1.23%
- $73.58
A solid company that was on the Magic Formula list a year ago.

-
HW
Headwaters Incorp - $4.79
- -6.81%
- $5.15
Another Magic Formula pick. This one in a troubled industry, but HW has excellent prospects for its construction materials and exciting opportunities in both nanotech and synthetic fuels (coal to gas) that are likely to deliver good returns for year.

-
JNJ
Johnson & Johnson - $65.11
- +0.08%
- $65.25
What's not to like. A consistently excellent performer.

-
NKE
Nike - $73.52
- -1.53%
- $74.26
Great global brand with solid growth prospects.

-
SBUX
Starbucks Corpora - $24.97
- -0.20%
- $24.97
Stock has slid back some of late and is likely to be somewhat volatile, but this company is far from the end of its growth cycle.

A. Thanks for the lead. In relation to
other mining companies of the same size
are HL financials and their future
mining considered strong? In researching
there are so many smaller mining
companies out there I am looking for
ones that are financially stable with
some good prospects. I also looked at
TGB. Any insights would be appreciated.
A. The only one I own : SLX,
too hard pick a winner out all of them
