The Barron's Challange is an annual stock-picking contest for students and teachers at institutions of higher learning. It has two separate divisions. One is open to students doing full- or part-time studies at a two- or four-year college, university or graduate or professional school, on campus or online. The second is for teachers -- a term that embraces professors, instructors, adjunct professors or anyone else who provides instruction at the junior-college-and-above level. This year, there were nearly 2,000 participants -- 1,847 students and 131 professors -- versus 1,600-plus in the previous go-round. Up to 75 trades are allowed, with a theoretical trading fee for each transaction. The contest covered the period Oct. 30, 2006, through March 30, 2007, and was administered by Stock-Trak, an Atlanta firm specializing in portfolio simulations. Results were based on total return -- price appreciation, plus dividends.
