In my article, Trade Microsoft Using Bollinger Bands, at Stockpickr Articles, I showed how to spot upside and downside breakouts using Bollinger bands.
Here, I look at activity in 10 tech stocks from December 29, 2008 through January 28, 2009, looking for the upside and downside breakouts and volatility squeezes I describe in the article. I used the standard 20 period moving average as the middle band, with 2 standard deviations defining the upper and lower bands.

12/28/2008 to 1/6/2009: Move from 19 to 20.75, with bands expandinig from below 20 day moving average to upper Bollinger band. 1/7/2009 to 1/21/2009: Consolidation and sideways price movement, from 21 to 19. Narrowing of bands. 1/22/2009 to 1/28/2009: Expansion of bands. Downward movement from 19 to 17 on 1/22/2009 and 1/23/2009, to lower Bollinger band. 1/24/2009 to 1/28/2009: Move from 16.9 to 18, from below lower Bollinger band to halfway between lower Bollinger band and 20 day moving average.

12/28/2008 to 1/6/2009: Price moved from 85 to 97, from above lower Bollinger band to 20 day moving average. Wide, steady bands. 1/7/2009 to 1/21/2009: Price move from 97 to 78. Downside breakout to below lower Bollinger band. 1/22/2009 to 1/28/2009: Widening bands with increasing prices, signaling upside breakout.

Bands remained steady but price slipped from upper to lower Bollinger band. 1/21/2009 to 1/28/2009: Move from 298 to 350. Expansion of band width and increasing prices, to upper Bollinger band, consistent with upside breakout.
