WMT
Wal Mart Stores - $52.97
- +1.26%
- $52.59
Despite poor same-store sales growth and higher store expenses, the company is doing an exceptional job of managing inventories and has been meeting its target of raising inventories at half the rate of revenue growth. The company is also shifting more toward groceries, which definitely brings in foot traffic. Once they've got them inside the stores, they can sell other types of merchandise. Walmart has been steadily working toward a more upscale ready-to-wear merchandise mix, but they haven't done so at the expense of the price-conscious shopper. This is certainly going to bring in a different consumer than their target base, which will go a long way to injcreasing revenues over the long term.

JRCC
James River Coal - $21.92
- +1.11%
- $22.09
Coal has gotten a shot in the arm because of rising oil and natural gas prices. Coal-fired power plants are becoming increasingly prevalent. What makes JRCC stand out is their mix of low-sulphur coal from Central Appalachia, although costly to mine, it is in demand with electric companies; and their high-sulphur coal that is cheaper to mine. Generators that are installing pollution reduction equipment use this high-sulphur product.
