Fox-Pitt analyst Howard Shapiro sees the amount between $5.5-$6 billion and Friedman Billing sees a $5 billion capital raise. Yesterday, Freddie Mac said it engaged Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers as financial advisors to help it consider very near term capital raising alternatives. Freddie Mac said it is also seriously considering reducing its fourth quarter common stock dividend by 50 percent. Freddie Mac reported a enormous third quarter loss of $2 billion or $3.29 per share. Shares of Freddie Mac are down 1.6% today, after sinking 29% yesterday.

The article notes that the stock prices have recovered big losses over the past few months as investors have showed increasing confidence that the deal wiLL win FCC and DOJ approval. Countrywide Financial Corporation commented on its financial condition, related to rumors of liquidity issues. Management continues to believe that Countrywide has ample liquidity and capital and will be a beneficiary of ongoing mortgage market consolidation. Countrywide said it is noteworthy that Moody's Investors Services yesterday confirmed Countrywide's investment grade credit ratings. Countrywide is down 9% today on the liquidity rumors. It was much lower earlier.
