Bernard Horn, the manager of the fund, was selected by Marketwatch as their Mutual Fund Manager of the Year. In their article on him they state:
“Horn, manager of the Quant Foreign Value Fund has been serving satisfying returns to fellow fund shareholders for years. He's shown how worldly investors can profit in both developed and emerging stock markets without shouldering excessive risk. That's one reason why Horn is the winner of MarketWatch's Mutual Fund Manager of the Year award for 2006.”
Horn is a bottoms up value investor. He starts by finding the countries and industries he believes to be the best value plays, and then scans all the companies that fit the bill forhis fundamental investment criteria.
According to the Quant Funds website, the funds investment approach starts with:
“The Fund will generally own stocks of 30 to 60 non-U.S. companies located in the countries comprising the Morgan Stanley Europe, Australasia and Far East (MSCI EAFE) Index. In addition, the Fund may also invest a portion of its assets in emerging markets. The diversification within the Fund, coupled with the fact that the operation of the Fund's investment model will generally lead the Fund to be invested in 10 or more countries, reduces the likelihood that negative performance of a single country will significantly impact the Fund's return.”
And then continue with the following process:
“The investment process for the Fund combines both quantitative and fundamental techniques. The Fund's approach is primarily bottom up, searching for individual stocks with strong, undervalued cash flows, regardless of location or industry. The Fund uses proprietary computer models to rank countries and industries on the basis of value and to narrow a universe of 24,000 companies down to 300 to 500 deserving of further consideration. Recognizing the difficulty of getting complete information about companies in some foreign markets, the Fund supplements the screening process by performing in-depth financial and fundamental analysis.”
In the Marketwatch article, Horn is quoted as saying “"I come from a good old-fashioned Yankee thriftiness. We look for that in companies we invest in. You'd be surprised what you can tell about a company just by walking around their offices and talking to people."
Morningstar gives the fund 5 stars.
