This is a major market index that tracks the portfolio of diversified companies that the creators believe own valuable patents. According to Ocean Tomo, the index has outperformed the S&P500 by 310 annualized basis points over the ten year span ending September of 2006.
The creators use a proprietary software which tracks the patents issued by the US Patent and Trademark office and assigns value to each one. This portfolio consists of the 10 segment leaders in the index. In the description box for each stock is a quote from Ocean Tomo on why they picked that company as a sector leader.

-
KMB
Kimberly Clark Cp - $63.71
- +0.25%
- $63.19
"Segment leader in Basic Materials. KCC's overall average IPQ Score of 130 is exceptional and is reflected in part by the fact that fully 85% - 89% of their market value is accounted for by the value of their intangible assets."

-
GE
Gen Electric Co - $15.33
- +6.24%
- $14.98
"Segment leader in Capital Goods. GE's patent portfolio is widely diversified as is their business holdings, ranging from materials technology to surgery to chemistry to solid-state electronics. GE recently yet again demonstrated their vision as to the importance of patent management by retaining the former Undersecretary of Commerce and Director of the USPTO, Q. Todd Dickinson, to manage their program as Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel. "

-
SNE
Sony Cp Adr - $28.87
- +0.49%
- $28.55
"Segment leader in Consumer Durables. What is surprising about Sony is the mere fact that as a foreign concern (traded on a US exchange) they are included in a major market index. This reflects the obvious change in importance of such companies since the creation of the S&P. Their patent portfolio is not surprising in that it covers well the electronics industry for which they are known, including information storage and retrieval, television, semi-conductors and visual displays. "

-
BSX
Boston Scientific - $8.08
- +0.37%
- $7.99
"Segment leader in Consumer Non-durables. BSC's average IPQ Score of 148 is the highest of any of the segment leaders and truly exceptional. Their patent estate is concentrated in interventional medical specialties."

-
MDR
Mcdermott Int Pan - $23.89
- +0.29%
- $23.46
"Segment leader in Energy. Though energy has typically been regarding as an industry valued for its tangible assets (e.g. reserves), McDermott represents the future of such firms with a growing patent estate spread across a variety of US Patent Classifications including chemicals, metal treatment and coatings. One such patent, USP 6,488,783 rates an IPQ Score of 150 (A) for high temperature gaseous oxidation, is an example of McDermott's efforts."

-
COF
Capital One Finan - $37.67
- -1.93%
- $37.89
"Financial segment leader. Capital One's portfolio is concentrated in digital processing systems and data processing for financial and business practices. The company represents a growing focus by financial service firms generally to build a strong patent estate. Such an effort was unheard of through the canyons of Wall Street even a short five years ago. Capital One's intangible assets represent a modest 46% - 56% of their market capitalization."

-
MMM
3m Company - $75.41
- -0.07%
- $74.87
"3M's patent estate achieves an impressive average IPQ Score of 135, second among all segment leaders. The patent estate is also as diverse as are its business offerings. USP 6,194,119 has a virtually unheard of IPQ Score of 224 (A+). Such technology for a thermal transfer element and process for forming organic electroluminescent devices is a strong showing for any firm."

-
MU
Micron Technology - $7.08
- -2.21%
- $7.21
"Segment leader in technology. Micron's Member Company Dashboard shows an impressive overall IPQ Score of 129 and a technology base focused on active solid-state devices and semiconductor manufacturing. The company's overall intangible asset value represents only 23% - 46% of their market capitalization in part due to their continued investment into worldwide manufacturing facilities."
