Having finally reached the point where I have enough income to begin saving, I am looking to get into growth stocks that are less susceptible to a bear market. Initially, i will concentrate on stocks with good dividends, which in my mind, are more recession proof. As my portfolio grows over time, and the economy becomes more stable, I will invest in more speculative stocks with more potential, while continuing to maintain the strong base of high yielding stocks.

-
CAT
Caterpillar Inc - $58.30
- +0.17%
- $59.13
CAT has a strong dividend, which is being maintained by the Company, and is global. I believe that CAT will continue to grow through the continued development of China and South America. It may not bring huge, immediate profits, but is well underpriced for the long-term.

-
DE
Deere Co - $54.24
- -0.29%
- $55.04
Similar to CAT. Contiunued global growth of population will require more efficient farmng efforts. DE is positioned to provide agricultural machinery globally that will facilitate the world's food needs over the long haul. Decent dividend will ensure that the stock doesn't fall to far.

-
BP
Bp Plc - $57.86
- +0.42%
- $58.71
Strong dividend, growing world energy demands won't decrease. The recent recession has only temporarily dampened energy needs, but they will come back strong as the economy recovers.

-
EGO
Eldorado Gold Cor - $13.44
- -3.52%
- $13.68
EGO currently owns 2 gold mines, 1 in Turkey and 1 in China. The first Company to obtain a license to mine gold in China. I see this as both a defensive stock and a speculative stock. The Company is positioned for continued growth, and will also rise with the price of gold in a down or inflationary economy.

-
BRK-B
Berkshire Hath Hl - $3320.00
- +0.88%
- $3324.00
I wish i could afford Berkshire A, but this will have to do. Gotta stick with Warren Buffett, he has been through the ups and downs so many times before. The Company is well diversified and has the history of beating the averages for over 30 years. Good enough for me. Note that this stock is valued at 1/30 the price of a share of BRK-A. If the price of B stock climbs to above 1/30 the price of A for a sustained amount of time, steps will be taken to reduce the price of B. In my experience, it tracks pretty well as 1/30th of A.

NAT
Nordic Am Tnkr Sh - $32.66
- -0.79%
- $32.81
Tanker Company transporting oil. Bought on Jim Cramer's recommendation. Great dividend, but the bad part is that they don't keep any of their free cash flow for reinvestment. Whenever they want to buy a new tanker, they have an equity offering to do so. This model works because the dillution is made up by increased earnings from the new tanker, enablling them to keep their dividend intact. I own this stock because i will collect the dividends until the price of oil increases to the point where the price of this stock goes up.

-
PFE
Pfizer Inc - $18.49
- -0.80%
- $18.83
I purchased Pfizer in order to be "diversified." So far, I have found pharma stocks to be incredibly boring, but this one has a decent dividend. I kind of regret buying it, but i felt like it was something i needed to do to invest properly.

-
HTE
Harvest Energy Tr - $9.44
- +0.32%
- $9.48
I don't actually own this stock, but have been tracking it. It it a Canadian Royalty Trust. The good part: high dividend yield paid MONTHLY. The bad part: Canada will take 15% tax out of the dividends, which i understand you could potentially get back as a US investor by filing the correct paperwork. I would love to hear from someone who has ventured into this arena before and how much of a pain it is. Also, I understand that Canada will change the rules for trusts in 2011. I have read mixed statements as to whether this will improve the situation or not. I am staying away for now in my real money, but it is very tempting.
