Do these revolutionary drugs cure people or kill people? Only time will tell, but for biotech investors and day-traders in the space that may or may not be the issue on hand. Whether it is the H1N1 Swine Flu, any horrible form of cancer or a rumor regarding a potential take-over, biotechnology stocks can literally go up or down 50% to 100% in a single trading session.
No other sector in the economy is more momentum driven then the biotechnology and health-sciences industry. `Here are the names that are currently in play this week:

Oxigene (OXGN): Shares of Oxigene are up around 100 percent over the past 5 trading sessions. Oxigene will be releasing data regarding its phase II clinical trial data of its vascular disrupting agent, ZYBRESTAT, used in women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer on Monday June 1st 2009 at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. If positive Oxigene could trade up another 50% to 100% all depending on how strong the reported data fairs.

MAP Pharmaceuticals (MAPP): Shares of MAP Pharmaceuticals are following in the path of Dendreon (DNDN) and Vanda Pharmaceuticals (VNDA) as the stock is currently up 150 percent as the company’s experimental orally inhaled migraine drug reached all four goals of a clinical trial. More than 30 million Americans suffer from migraines each year, with no direct remade to be offered. Look for MAP Pharmaceuticals to take advantage of the recent positive news and raise additional capital via an equity offering of additional shares into the market.

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals (CYCC): Two weeks ago brokerage and investment bank Piper Jaffray reported that Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals would likely report positive data during the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Cyclacel’s key drug is ‘Sapacitabine’ which is currently being testing for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, which is commonly referred to as AML and accounts for 1.2% of all cancer deaths in the United States. Sapacitabine is also being testing in patients who have myelodysplastic syndrome, commonly referred to as MDS. The data from these two drugs alone has been extremely positive: in early February Cyclacel said: “Available data from our ongoing Phase 2 studies of sapacitabine include complete remissions at all doses tested with good tolerability, which support previously-reported Phase 1 findings and suggest that this agent may address a substantial, unmet medical need in older patients with AML and MDS."On February 6th 2009, Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals announced a fast-track agreement with the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a Phase II test planned for sapacitabine. Piper Jaffray has a $3 price target on the stock.

Cytokinetics (CYTK): Early Tuesday morning, Cytokinetics announced that mega-biotech company Amgen (AMGN) would be paying Cytokinetics $50 million dollars as part of an option to exercise rights to one of Cytokinetics key heart drugs: ‘CK-1827452’. Currently the $50 million dollar payment represents almost 1/3rd of Cytokinetic’s current market capitalization. Under the official agreements will pay Cytokinetics a non-refundable fee of $50 million and future performance-based payments of up to $600 million.

Exelixis (EXEL): Recent interim results from Exelixis and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) have shown to shrink brain tumors is some patients suffering with advance forms of brain cancer. From the early stage data, 10 out of the 46 patients, or 36 percent of all patients reported a 50 percent or more shrinkage, with 1 patient reporting a 100 percent reduction in tumor size.
