severely beaten down in the cardiovascular arena. now trying to come back as a diabetes preventing medicine. with recent black box warning for the tzd's, may have a chance. Several dual application drugs looking for approval-both lipid lowering relatives looking for diabetes approval New drug may soon help type 2 diabetics NEW ORLEANS, July 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. study suggests people with type 2 diabetes might soon be able to control both their glucose and cholesterol levels with a single drug. Researchers led by Professor Vivian Fonseca at Tulane University conducted a clinical trial that demonstrated the compound colesevelam HCl, in combination with Sulfonylurea-based therapy in patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes, achieved significantly reduced glucose levels versus those in the study taking a placebo. "People with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol face a number of challenges in keeping their glucose levels and cholesterol in check," said Fonseca. "This study demonstrated the potential to improve two important metabolic parameters with one drug." Patients who received colesevelam HCl were shown to have significant reductions in blood sugar levels, and participants' lipid profiles in the colesevelam HCl group also showed substantial improvement over placebo. An application for the commercial production and sale of the drug is pending with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

stem cell harvesting and noon-hour plastic surgery company Women in Europe could be having boob jobs on their lunch breaks as early as next year, according to a scientific journal. A fast-track breast enlargement process is to be rolled out by a Californian biotech company and could be introduced across Europe by next year, the Chemistry and Industry magazine says. The procedure, called Celution, takes just over an hour and involves injecting a "super-charged'' fat mixture into breast tissue. Fat is taken from a patient's buttocks or stomach using minor liposuction under local anaesthetic. The useful stem cells are separated out and an hour later a dose of stem and regenerative cells is packaged into a cartridge ready for injection. It costs a few thousand dollars and the breasts enlarge over about six months, according to the program's creator Cytori Therapeutics. Cytori Therapeutics head of research and development Kai Pinkernel said the company's initial focus will be on reconstructive surgery in breast cancer patients.
