Krochuk and Gregory Fraser, his partner, left Fidelity Investments to launch GRT Capital Partners five and a half years ago. GRT manages $900 million, with $650 million of it invested in its marquee long-short fund. The remaining assets are dispersed over four other investment strategies, including a new Shariah account compliant with Islamic law that started up last month.
Portfolio managers Kim Peters, who heads the Shariah account, and John DeTore, who manages the European market neutral account, chimed in with their top picks in this Barron's 4-30-07 interview.

SHLD
Sears Holdings Co - $67.65

- $67.36
Sears Holdings (SHLD) is a way to get exposure to the hedge-fund experience of Eddie Lampert [Edward Lampert is chairman of Sears] without paying hedge-fund fees. He has proven himself to be an excellent manager.

AKH
Akh - $0.00

Air France-KLM (AKH) is a great player in a strong group. It looks inexpensive even though the stock had doubled last year. The reason is that there was a lot of bad news in airlines and the prices were depressed. Bad news in oil prices is already discounted, [and] higher fares and occupancy are still having an impact. Air France is competitive in the industry so the earnings are strong, and looking at the forward fundamentals of the company, we think the stock price could go higher. It sells at 12 times earnings, and analysts are upgrading.

We don't own a lot of financials in our strategy because they don't work that well quantitatively. [GRT's financial sector exposure is mainly through Berkshire Hathaway, insurers and some savings and loans.

Alcoa (AA) and Biogen Idec (BIIB) are cheap on industry-relative forward earnings per share and price-to-book. Alcoa is the leader in alumina production. There's currently little excess world capacity in its markets and the outlook for revenue growth and earnings is very good.

ZOLT
Zoltek Companies - $8.67

- $8.63
Short Position: Zoltek (ZOLT) makes carbon fiber. Some of their products are being used in windmill blades. If you accept the fact that carbon fiber is a commodity, the producer is hyped up by alternate energy analysts at over 40 times fiscal 2007 [earnings estimate]. The multiples are too high.

A. Type II Diabetes in obese patients is
wrecking our health care system.
Overall, more than $1 in every $10 spent
on health care in the United States goes
toward treating Diabetes. Blood glucose
test strips alone can cost about a
dollar each and if you're testing
several times a day every day, the costs
can add up pretty quickly. XOMA has the
first drug "XOMA 052" in the last 10yrs
which will significantly impact this
industry and you would no longer require
daily insulin injections or insulin at
all, for that matter. This would save
the government billions, search on that
one and you'll make a fortune. The
government cannot continue to pay these
kinds of rising diabetes costs, when
there is an alternative which is so safe
and so effective which just became
patented in Europe.
