I keep finding people looking for 'value' in financials. that they are going to buy these supposedly valuable financials on dips.
i sought to find value in a less traditional, but i believe more effective way. i did a screen for financials with a debt/capital ratio of .2 or less as of the Q1 08 filings, have had positive earnings, and positive price action in the past 52 weeks. here is what i came up with.
to make not of, V has not had positive earnings, but has been one of the absolute best in terms of price action and i believe belongs on the list. As For UMBF and HCBK, they were not part of this screen but are the only regional that can lay claim to being positive in 2007, and up over 40% and 14%--respectively--half way through 2008. Thus making it perhaps the only banks to be positive during these two years, going into 2009. These banks are
doing it right. RBCAA is a bit more speculative, was down all of 07, but is up big in 08, has good rev and EPS growth projections for next year.
also, you will take not that there are no Goldmans or Wells on this list. they are best of breed but they have too many liabilities to battle a global contraction in debt, and their ROE's have been crushed, which makes it harder for them to make money on that debt going forward. not to mention the choppy/negative price action.
