FRED KUEHNDORF, manager of Dreyfus Premier S&P Stars, profiled in Barrons January 15, 2007. "16% annualized gain-versus the 13.08% average for its peers-according to Morningstar, which gives it a four-star rating."
"We typically initiate positions at 2% [the fund totals about 50 stocks ], and we let the winners run," he says. The average market cap is about $7 billion. More generally, "you are investing in companies at a great point in their evolution, because they have grown past the point where they can be squashed by a competitor," he says. They also are less likely than large-caps to grab headlines with excesses like oversized executive payouts.
The recent increase in mergers and acquisitions could also help the fund, because S&P's discounted cash-flow models "historically have been good at identifying takeover candidates," he says.
