I'm developing a trading system and found that many of the positions I held, while arguably good positions, don't fit the rules I'm establishing. So I sold out of most of the positions and am keeping a large cash position while I fine-tune my approach. I'm bearish on the overall market currently - it's easier for it to go down than to go up, so the line of least resistance is down.

Will be selectively adding positions that meet my new guidelines, but wouldn't be surprised to see that I buy nothing until after the big shakeup, which I believe to be after banks and brokers take their big one-time charges to mark held positions to market and after analysts reduce earnings projections to reflect the new lowered volume of mortgage-related biz.

Upside through cost cutting, successful merger, further exchange consolidation, increased trading volumes in Europe. Down substantially on this position, but remain convinced there's still upside from my 84 basis. Selling covered calls @ 100 and naked puts @ 60 on this position to reduce my overall basis. Looks like I may be buying more at 60 soon, at least I got paid to buy.

Dividends, upside from eventual fed rate cut, hedge to financials caught in sub-prime slime. Also down substantially on this position, but will ride it out until the eventual fed cuts. Mike Farrell was the first to call the mortgage crises (OK, Doug Kass too). A bit early, but exactly right on how it plays out. Farrell gets the benefit of the doubt.
