Goldman Sachs Grp - $176.57
- +2.79%
- $173.68
“Can you imagine, given the noxious gravitational pull of the UltraShort Financial ProShares (SKF), how much Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) would be up today? We know that the goal of the shorts is to break Wells Fargo (WFC) and Bank of America (BAC) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM), and they want to do it today. They are huge in the SKF. (It is almost not worth it to break Citigroup's (C) common anymore.) But so are Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. They are the SKF players with "enough points" to be worth destroying. Now it is possible that the shorts are smart and going long Goldman and Morgan Stanley and then piling into the SKF. It is more likely, though, that the longs are listening to the number bumps for Goldman and Morgan Stanley and realizing that these are the two banks that will emerge as the "safe" places for the rich people to put their money and turn to for advice. I think these stocks would be up huge if it weren't for the SKF. Soon there will not be enough points left to matter to the major banks, and then maybe the SKF pressure will go away -- it really doesn't work well other than intraday. Let’s see what happens, but today's action so far is a huge ringing endorsement of Goldman and Morgan Stanley and their new business models and clean balance sheets. Put simply, they don't need the money.
