“Is this ever an homage-to-China market. I am amazed at how much the obvious China plays are roaring. There is no doubt in my mind that once you eliminated the balance-sheet risk of Freeport (FCX) it has become a pure China play. That country needs copper. Some of the big industrials with China exposure -- Honeywell (HON), United Technologies (UTX), Eaton (ETN) -- are acting very well. Nucor (NUE) is totally China, in the sense that China can make the worldwide steel inventories disappear with by ordering hundreds of bridges built. The best China tech play, Qualcomm (QCOM), is moving up smartly. Great feeling there. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Cisco (CSCO) have excellent China exposure and are going up. Caterpillar (CAT), a hated stock, could soon be seeing some China gains, as the Chinese can buy these machines on the cheap. Agriculture's going to work, too. I don't like the fertilizer stocks, but Terra Nitrogen (TNH) will do. Do not forget that oil is in oversupply, but China does not want to get caught again short of oil. I am beginning to wonder, once again, whether there isn't a disconnect between what China will be buying and those futures, which, again, do not seem to want to go through $30. The Chinalco deal to me says, "Look out, China's going to buy big stakes in oil companies, just like they did in Vale (RIO)." Conoco (COP) and Occidental Pete (OXY) are my best plays here. If you believe in China as a growth engine again, may I suggest you consider the vast exposure of Yum! Brands (YUM) to China, and the growing exposure of Pepsi (PEP) and McDonald's (MCD) to China. All of these make sense to me. China's for real. You have to pick some of them and buy.”
