“Is Amazon (AMZN) totally zero sum? When I see the exploding sales and I measure them against, say, eBay (EBAY), there is no doubt in my mind that Amazon is simply slaying eBay, and the problems at the auction site -- vs. the fixed price -- are secular in nature as well as cyclical. Amazon is to eBay as Google (GOOG) was to Yahoo! (YHOO). At a time when millions are leaving the employment rolls, it's easy to shop Amazon and know you are going to save money because of the tax savings. Plus, the convenience is very bad for the mall. I wonder whether people switched to Amazon when gasoline was at $4, and simply haven't come back, it is that good. Books? I mean, between the Kindle and the prices, who the heck is still going to Borders (BGP)? That's what it looks like. As someone who loves bookstores, this is my single biggest regret, but it is a wonder that Borders just doesn't say, "We are being wiped out by Amazon"? To me it looks like the only outfit that doesn't have to fear Amazon is Wal-Mart (WMT), where the prices are so low that the tax savings don't matter. But that leaves a lot of other retailers in their wake. For those of us who have watched Amazon's sales grow and, more important, its earnings, it is a marvel to believe that this, often considered the most hyped of the turn-of-the-century dot-coms, really did turn out to be the most lucrative. Jeff Bezos had a vision, and he executed on his vision. How many others in this tawdry era can say that?”
