“What would you do if you heard a company was buying back two-fifths of its capitalization in the open market between now and 2011? What would you do if it is hugely profitable and getting more profitable with expanding gross margins? What would you do if the orders were booming and the competition is simply a joyous duopoly? In this market, I guess you yawn. I am talking about Joy Global (JOYG), the best mining-equipment story in the world. Today it announced a $2 billion buyback -- it is a $5 billion company! Why not? It is the major coal-mining-equipment company in China, and China is opening a coal-fired plant every other day and will be for years; it's a voracious user of coal. You need Joy Global to get at that coal. Orders are exploding. I had the CEO on recently, Michael Sutherlin, and you could tell he was upset that his stock was pummeled despite good orders. He was right. The darned thing missed by a couple of pennies -- 7 cents! -- and the stock went down huge even though it had already been cut almost in half! My take: The company's quickly taking itself private. It is in a sector that is so hated and owned by so many hedge funds that it is taking matters into its own hands. That's what we wanted to see when I wrote yesterday about the cyclical getting too cheap. Joy Global is lucky if it is able to survive its independence given the small size it will be when it is done, at least at this pace. At least the stock is managing a little upside today. I think it will be up more, but only because of the buyback, as it is still way too hated to have a sustained rally. I like this one very much and am very tempted to buy it. I don't buy stocks that are up on big down days, but this one is screaming to be bought. Maybe it should be listened to.”
