This same cynical process happens over and over again with these stocks. I have no idea how the CEOs who run these companies can stand this progression. Here are two important companies that are navigating the housing and financial depressions well and nobody cares until after they go up when the mutual funds declare their favoritism with buying. Last week's absolutely better-than-expected AT&T number did exactly what I thought it would do -- inspire no one. These stocks are cheap, they pay you to be in them and they keep delivering. They cost little to sit in. They will be back. Verizon and AT&T should be bought right here in my opinion. Even if the analysts can't stand them. Right now at least. I say this because we heard a lot of this last week after AT&T reported its terrific quarter with good growth and very little economic impact -- and sure enough it's getting killed again. The quarter, which included nice hints about a big dividend boost and a well-balanced plan to buy back stock, was met with the same level of enthusiasm I expect Verizon to get: initial pizzazz and then a recognition that something's wrong -- something that only the analysts see.
