Columbia Acorn Fund is an open-end fund incorporated in the USA. The Fund's objective is long-term growth of capital.
They are long-term holders of stocks. From a recent interview with Charles McQuaid he said, "We're not going to sell a stock just because it hits some arbitrary price or market cap limit. We certainly have some large-cap stocks but they have done very well for us, and we have no reason to sell them."
Because of their value focus, many of the companies they invest in become targets for acquirers. In 2006, 25 of the companies they invested in were bought, often at significant premiums to where they were trading.
The Fund invests primarily in the stocks of small- and medium-sized companies. The Fund generally invests in the stocks of companies with market capitalizations of less than $5 billion at the time of purchase. The fund has a Morningstar rating of 5 stars and is led by Charles P. McQuaid. McQuaid is principal and director of research with Wanger Asset Management. Prior to joining the firm, he was an analyst and principal with Harris Associates. He also held the position of analyst with the Equitable Life Insurance Company. McQuaid holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
