I try to only own 3-5 stocks at any given time for concentrated returns. I do not subscribe to any one investing strategy. I like to have a somewhat Bruce Lee/pragmatic approach to my investing. Many strategies have their own merit in the right venues and I like be flexible between them. Although, I do not believe in shorting stocks simply because the effort it takes to find a bad company could just as well be used to find a good company, and the risk/reward curve on a short is just not right in my opinion (unless its a terrible bear market) That said, my major influences are:
Peter Lynch
Cramer
George Soros
Ken Fisher
My dad - we talked about stocks and finance when I grew up instead of sports
In 2006, I did this:
ATI - 77.85% gain
MA - 33.78% gain
JPM - 19.29% gain
SMXC - 16.31% gain
DELL - 10.8% gain
CSC - 2.85% gain
CSCO - 8.22% loss
HAL - 22.61% loss
I also had a few non-performing trades that were + or - 0-2% and cut them loose to not tie up my cash that are omitted from here.
This was my first year of using real money (I just turned 24 and finally had excess cash flow at 23). Most of those were held for 2-3 months. I am not against holding stocks for a long time (I held ATI for 6 months) but I am also impatient.

AMD
Adv Micro Devices - $5.04
- +4.35%
- $4.84
It will be Intel's peer or superior in the long run. I use and recommend AMD based servers to my customers. The fact is that for database applications and floating point math, they are superior to Intel in a real world environment. Current threats: Intel "quadcore" is a superior 1 processor machine for generic IT needs. Core 2 is superior for 32 bit, not floating point applications (generic home computing) Intel has massive marketing capabilities Gaining market share at the expense of margins Intel 45nm AMD bad 65nm launch Strengths: Still continues to gain market share in spite of Intel's best efforts on all fronts Emerging markets such as China are very open to using AMD Good business partners ATI merger should be beneficial in the long run and allow OEM's to do one stop shopping. ATI has better chipsets than Intel, especially where graphics are concerned. Some day, the GPU/CPU combo should be good too.

NUAN
Nuance Communicat - $13.76
- -1.50%
- $13.80
Short term speculation and potential long term gains. I wouldn't normally buy this kind of stock but other people want to for some reason so I will let the price go up for a while. I will dump it as soon as there is any material bad news. The only thing pushing this stock is good news. They aren't profitable yet.

OXY
Occidental Pet - $80.88
- -0.07%
- $80.30
Bought at 43.44 on 1/12/2006. Officially calling the short term bottom of oil and many oil stocks for ~3 month period.

-
NCT
Newcastle Inv Cp - $2.38
- 0.00%
- $N/A
Bought at $25.01 on 3/14/2007 as a reflexivity play. It was irrationally beaten down with the subprime panic but should actually benefit from the situation.

PRX
Pharmacutical Co - $22.00
- -3.42%
- $23.50
1. Democrats control congress. That is good for generic drugs (patent laws, medicare, etc) 2. Small cap - I love how small caps can move 3. Good company 4. If we have a recession, people still need medicine, especially cheap medicine.
